‘School Pick Up’ is a part of my Swim series of paintings.

I make these paintings by first painting an abstract background. I then cover most of that up, with a flat, neutral colour, leaving little flashes of the colours beneath to peek through. Those flashes of the first painting, with an eye added, become the fish. I’m essentially destroying a painting, to find a new one. (Yes, it’s hard to make myself do it!).

Each painting therefore, is, and can only ever be, because of the process, completely unique.

I don’t plan these paintings too rigidly - they are instinctive, free and creative. The fish seem to just appear where they want to be, in the story they want to tell. This one reminds me of picking up the children from school, something I used to really love.

I love making these paintings because they speak to me of an inner world of imagination and fun, peeking through.
