The Call

Lovers Sea Mermaid Fisherman Call

Quite often, I think about the sea – what’s down there, and what mythical legends might be unfolding just short of the horizon, hidden from our eyes and understanding.

It usually sparks a burst of creativity! I have particularly enjoyed making this painting. It started with a line of poetry that popped into my head: ‘We bear the same mark’. That could have gone anywhere, I’m sure, but this thing about the sea was also catching on my mind again at the same time. And then there are lovers, and there’s also the irresistible call. And so, as I painted, just feeling my way, this poem also came:

The Call

We bear the same mark
earned by salt
and
a lifetime
of looking
at the flat horizon
an indelible
invisible
stain
the call
of
danger
is it fate
to have
found
each other
some
would say so
or
could it be
co-incidence
that
your hair
spreads out
like
seaweed
tangling
reason & logic
causing me
causing me
oh God
causing me
to drop down
silently
over the side
into the
phosphorescent water
