standing where the water sometimes comes

standing where

the water

sometimes comes

i’d like to see

a seal

but am scared

of meeting

any

living thing

the sea is enough

belching

at the rocks

and everywhere

i look

is surprise:

heron’s feet seaweed

fallen leaves

brittle tight barnacles

red moss

beating like a heart,

breathing as lungs might

the disturbance

of sound

when

my boot

leaves

a

rockpool
